London Trading Standards (LTS) is tackling rogue landlord and rental agents through its Report a Rogue Landlord or Agent, which helps the capital’s 2.7 million private renters to exercise their legal rights.
The platform is being promoted as part of London Trading Standards Week, an annual initiative to highlight the work being done by Trading Standards teams across the city’s boroughs.
The Report a Rogue Landlord or Agent portal enables tenants to notify their local Trading Standards team about any breaches of the law, and provides a single point of contact to anonymously and confidentially report housing concerns.
The law protects private renters who are paying more than five weeks’ rent as a deposit, have had their deposit withheld without consent, are living in poor housing conditions, are awaiting repairs, have been unfairly evicted, are paying fees to view a property or have been asked to pay any surprise additional administration fees.
The portal also provides advice about problems with private landlords or letting agents on its dedicated renters’ advice page.
Now in its second year, the project is supported by every local authority in London resulting, providing a much-needed resource for London’s private renters.
