Kent Police and Kent County Council Trading Standards have teamed up to remind local residents and businesses about the dangers of rogue traders, and to encourage the community to be vigilant against traders who prey on consumer vulnerability.
Officers from Kent Police’s Rural Task Force, along with Kent Trading Standards Officers, spoke to traders carrying out building and roofing work on local properties to remind them of their duties as responsible businesses, and to discuss ways they can help protect their industry from rogue traders.
They also visited areas that have previously been targeted by rogue traders and engaged with residents, giving advice and information leaflets as well as items to help them secure their homes.
The one-day operation was held in parts of Canterbury, Folkestone, Dover, Deal and Sandwich.
PC Amy White from Kent Police said: “If you encounter a rogue trader, it can feel very overwhelming and lonely. Sometimes people will agree to having work done because they don’t feel confident in challenging aspects of it, such as the quality of the work, or a sudden large increase in price.
“We want to reassure residents that they have choices, they are entitled to say no, and to encourage them to report if they think they have been a victim of rogue traders or doorstep criminals so we can work with Kent Trading Standards to identify and stop offenders.”
Clive Phillips, Kent Trading Standards’ Operations Manager for Complex Investigations, said: “Kent Trading Standards, in partnership with Kent Police, is committed to protecting our community from the harmful practices of doorstep criminals. These unscrupulous individuals cause significant financial and emotional distress to residents, often targeting the most vulnerable.
“We urge anyone who has concerns or needs advice to contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service for free on 0808 223 1133. Residents can also find vetted traders on our Trading Standards Checked website. Together, we can ensure a safer and fairer environment for all.”
