Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Council Trading Standards has awarded Primary Authority approval to AgeAI, an age verification app which can reportedly identify people aged between 18 and 20 as being under the age of 25 with 100% accuracy.
The approval of the app – which uses UKAS-certified FaceAssure technology – means it can be used by retailers across the UK to automate age checks. It can also automate the recording of refusals of sales of products such as alcohol, vapes and tobacco.
Deepak Tewari, CEO of technology company Privately, which owns AgeAI, said: “No responsible store owner wants to sell alcohol, vapes, cigarettes, fireworks or indeed any age-inappropriate products to a minor – the fines are significant and persistent offenders can even be closed down.
“Peterborough & Cambridgeshire Trading Standards’ approval of AgeAI is a great endorsement that this application is a great fit for retailers selling restricted items across the UK, enabling them to take active measures to demonstrate compliance.”
Peterborough & Cambridgeshire Trading Standards Business Hub Manager, Mark Oliver, commented: “Providing minors with age-appropriate user experiences is a major priority in 2024 and beyond.
“The AgeAI solution is a really good example of how technology can be adapted to meet the needs of businesses working in increasingly regulated and challenging retail environments.”
